Tennis World Canberra is Canberra’s only facility with High Performance Hard Courts available for public bookings, a high amount of Clay Courts are also available.

CHH recommends all High Performance CHH players become Tennis World members, on the Silver Package as a minimum, as it can have a significant impact on the long-term development of the player and a Silver Package will reduce the financial burden over the year.

Other Clubs and Synthetic Grass?

Despite its prevalence in Canberra CHH does not recommend High Performance players regularly compete on Synthetic Grass as the surface is inherently not conducive to High Performance tennis and movement patterns. Synthetic Grass courts also cause the highest amount of slip and fall injuries in High Performance tennis players due to the unreliable and slippery sandy surface. It’s still a good surface to be included in a tennis players diet every now and then, however players should exercise caution changing direction and decelerating at high speeds on ‘Syn Grass’.

Tennis World Considerations

Although TW Canberra membership is greater than twice the cost of a membership at other smaller clubs in Canberra, members are getting value from the membership from the standard of the facility and court surfaces.

However, there are some considerations and tips for CHH players who are members at TW Canberra which will help maintain the good relationship CHH has with TW and its team:

  • 120mins - Members should book a court for 120mins. It is against CHH Golden Rules to book a court for a CHH match for less than 2 hours. (For example, 1 hour and “fingers crossed they let us continue”).

  • Two Members? - If both players are TW members, they can arrange amongst themselves to book an hour each, consecutively, on the same court and it will either be free or significantly less. Make sure this is done roughly at the same time however to avoid missing out on the same court.

  • Lights out! - Lights go out at 9pm, and the facility closes early on a Sunday. Players should aim to start at 6.30pm at the latest in case the match goes slightly over 2hrs and lights are still needed before 9pm.

  • Guest Fees - The ‘home’ player will still need to pay the guest fee, ‘home’ players should let their guests know not to pay their guest fee at the TW counter until the ‘home’ player arrives and can pay for it.

  • Booking System Choices - Players will sometimes be given a choice of which booking to make when booking a court. Players should check both to make sure they pick the cheapest one as the system sometimes suggests the more expensive one as default.
