CHH League Heat Policy
PLAYER SAFETY COMES FIRST
➡️ Note: Instead of gambling on the weather, both players should aim for times early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the heat of the summer day.
The CHH League follows Tennis Australia’s Extreme Weather Policy to ensure safe playing conditions. Heat-related match suspensions and cancellations are based on the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) readings, available at BOM Canberra WBGT.
Canberra Airport WBGT applies to Northside & Woden matches.
Tuggeranong WBGT applies to Woden & Southside matches.
1. Heat-Related Match Relocation & Cancellations
Moving a match to an indoor venue is only possible by mutual agreement of both players. The home court remains unless an agreement is reached or conditions warrant suspension.
If a match is moved indoors, both players must equally split the indoor court hire cost, which can be expensive and typically requires back-to-back 1-hour bookings per player.
Afternoon League Matches (starting 12pm or later): Players may cancel a match by mutual agreement up to 1 hour before play begins if the forecast WBGT exceeds 32.5°C or ambient temperature exceeds 38.0°C.
2. Heat Suspension During Play
If WBGT exceeds 32.5°C or ambient temperature exceeds 38.0°C, play must be suspended at the completion of the current game.
If the WBGT remains above 32.5°C or ambient above 38.0°C for 90+ consecutive minutes, the match may be cancelled by mutual agreement or by the CHH League Manager.
Players may choose to continue playing but do so at their own risk.
3. Special Considerations for Juniors (Under 16)
If a junior (U16) is involved, the match may be cancelled up to 1 hour before play if the forecast WBGT exceeds 32.5°C or ambient temperature exceeds 36.0°C.
During play, if WBGT exceeds 32.5°C or ambient temperature exceeds 36.0°C, play must be suspended at the completion of the current game.
If WBGT remains above 32.5°C or ambient above 36.0°C for 90+ consecutive minutes, the match may be cancelled by mutual agreement or by the CHH League Manager.
4. Rescheduling & Reporting
If a match is cancelled due to heat, it must be rescheduled as a priority and completed within the next 2 weeks, or it will be marked as a tie.
If the match is toward the end of the round-robin or is otherwise unable to be played, it will be marked as a tie.
Players must inform the CHH League Manager of the reschedule date.
If a match is suspended and later resumed, it must continue from the score and game position where play stopped.
